Cross Country at Gardner-Webb on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams are back in action Saturday morning when the Bulldogs travel just down to the road to compete in the Big South Preview that will be held at Gardner-Webb starting at 9:45 a.m.
Asheville has been off since both teams finished in third place at the Catamount Classic two weeks ago (Aug. 29). Saturday's meet will help both teams get a feel for the Big South Championship Meet that will be held here on Nov. 1.
“We're looking forward to competing again on Saturday,” declared Bulldog coach Jesse Norman. “It will be good to run on the course that we'll be running the conference championship on in November.”
Two weeks ago in Cullowhee, the Asheville men all finished in the top 20, with Andy Thornburg leading the way with a mark of 16:17.74 in the 5k to finish 12th. Patrick Osborne ran a time of 16:18.66 to finish 14th while newcomer Jared Buddington ran a time of 16:36.37 to finish 17th.
Skyler Winchester (16:37.46) and Caleb Smith (16:38.80) rounded out the Bulldogs' runner, finishing 18th and 20th, respectively.
As a team the Blue & White averaged a time of 16:28.80, finishing with a total time of 82:29.03. Bulldogs Brent Schouler (16:40.27) and Ryan Catrine (16:42.89) ran unattached and placed 21st and 22nd.
On the women's side freshman Casey Greenwalt ran the two-mile course in a time of 12:14.34 to finish 12th. Kelsie Rubino (12:18.20), Sarah Heisner (12:18.47), Phoebe Schneider (12:20.28) and Kasey Briggs (12:25.36) finished 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively, to help the Bulldogs to the third place finish.
The women averaged a time of 12:19.35, with a cumulative time of 61:36.75. Adrian Etheridge (12:29.23) finished 22nd and Alyssa Lashway (12:46.87) finished 27th running unattached for the Blue & White.
Both teams return to action next week in Asheville when the third annual Asheville Cross Country Carnival takes place on Saturday, Sept. 20 starting at 9 a.m. The meet will be held at the Asheville Christian Academy Cross Country Course.
