ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team finishes up its home season this weekend when the Bulldogs play two key Big South Conference matches. Asheville hosts Presbyterian College Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by a match with Winthrop Saturday at 1 p.m.
Friday's match can be seen on the Big South Network for free under the multimedia tag at uncabulldogs.com.
The Bulldogs (6-20, 2-8 BSC) ended a three-game losing streak last Saturday at Campbell with Asheville winning a hard-fought 3-1 match at Gore Arena. Frederico Santos' club bounced back from a 3-0 loss at High Point on Friday to pick up the win in Buies Creek.
“I was really proud of the team last Saturday at Campbell. We had a tough match at High Point the evening before but really played well the next day,” commented Santos. “I hope we can build on this Campbell win this weekend with our last two matches at Justice Center.”
Asheville is in ninth place in the Big South Conference standings and needs to get into the top eight to make the league tournament at Coastal Carolina in two weeks. The Bulldogs are a game behind Campbell (3-7), making these matches this weekend pretty important.
“We need to win this weekend,” declared Santos. “They will be tough matches to win as PC and Winthrop are good teams that are well-coached. Hopefully, we can built on last Saturday and take that momentum to this weekend.”
The Bulldogs own a win over the Blue Hose (10-14, 5-6 BSC) this season in Clinton. Asheville rallied for a five-set victory last month. The Blue & White fell at Winthrop (17-10, 7-4 BSC) in four sets earlier this year in Rock Hill.
“Presbyterian is playing well and has produced some good wins,” stated Santos. “We played very well when we won at PC last month but it was a match that could have gone easily gone the other way.
“These matches are big for us but they're equally big for PC and Winthrop, as well,” added Santos. “We will need to play as well as we can to have a chance at getting a result this weekend.”
Shelby Erickson leads Asheville in kills with a 2.51 per set average, followed closely by Christine Lakatos at 2.48. Junior libero Bryn Pfieffer leads the club in digs at 3.41. Madison Vaughn tops the Bulldogs in blocks at 0.99.
