Women's Swimming Sets Records on Final Day of Wingate Frenzy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's swimming team ended its performance at the Wingate Winter Frenzy on Sunday with some spectacular results.
The Bulldogs posted season-bests and lifetime bests throughout the final day of racing at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.
“I am very proud of our performances this weekend. The team supported each other, swam fast and learned a lot about racing,” stated third-year coach Elizabeth Lykins. “We are progressing well and clearly the hard work is paying off.”
Heading up the impressive results was Asheville's performance in the mile event. The Bulldogs had four different competitors score points in the event. Earning first-place honors was Galen Broido as she coasted to victory in the race with a school-record time of 17:05.30.
Allie Snyder took eighth-place with a lifetime-best time of 17:41.89. Coming in 18th with a lifetime best mark of 18:14.17 was Brittany Thomas. Freshman Ale Sanchez was the final Bulldog to earn points in the mile as came in 24th place.
In the 200 backstroke preliminary rounds, the Bulldogs gathered five season-best times for Reid Jackson, Galen Broido, Stephanie Smith, Alejandra Sanchez and Emily Werth. Werth reset her own freshmen and varsity record going 2:04.90 and qualified for the A final.
In the finals, Werth took seventh place and lowered her season-best mark time of 2:04.59. Ale Sanchez moved up to 14th in the finals.
Sophomore Alexandra van Dorsten qualified for the C final in the 100 freestyle. She improved her place and time moving up to 21st place with 53.04, another season-best mark.
The 200 breaststroke brought another lifetime best. Freshmen Shannon Kennedy earned 10th place points in the B final with a 2:23.97.
In the 200 butterfly, Werth was at it again. She reset the freshmen and varsity records in the preliminary heats with a time of 2:10.00. She qualified for the B Final and finished in 16th place.
The final event of the night was the 400 freestyle relay. The A relay team of Ashley Ireland, Ale Sanchez, Alexandra van Dorsten & Emily Werth earned 11th place points (3:37.55). While the B squad of Stephanie Smith, Alessandra Troncoso, Elizabeth Murray and Shannon Kennedy took 21st.
The UNC Asheville women's swim team will compete again on Nov. 21 when the Bulldogs participate in the Shark Invitational at Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
