More Swimming Records Fall on Saturday

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  – The UNC Asheville women's swimming team enjoyed another solid day at the Wingate Winter Frenzy at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.

 

Bulldog coach Elizabeth Lykins was pleased with her team's effort on the second day of the three-day event in downtown Charlotte.

 

“I'm really happy with our performances and hoping for more great swims tomorrow,” stated Lykins. “We are showing great progress with all of the new records.”

 

Day two had more school records broken and more individual lifetime bests.

 

The records began in the 200 medley relay as Asheville's A team of Reid Jackson, Alessandra Troncoso, Alexandra van Dorsten and Ashley Ireland set a new school mark with a time of 1:47.17. They earned eighth-place points in the event

 

The B team of Stephanie Smith, Shannon Kennedy, Carly Emerson and Elizabeth Murray set a new freshman relay record with a time of 1:52.07.

 

In the 400 individual medley, Stephanie Smith swam a lifetime best and won the B final earning 9th place points with a time of 4:35.89. Galen Broido finished 12th in the race with a season best time of 4:39.75.

 

Emily Werth continued to set records tonight. In the 100 butterfly, she posted a time of 58.32, setting a freshmen and varsity record. Later in the evening, she lowered her own varsity and freshmen record in the 100 backstroke as she earned fourth place points with a time of 57.71.

 

In the 200 freestyle, three Bulldogs qualified to return at night. Alexandra van Dorsten finished 13th with a season best of 1:55.09. Allie Snyder improved to 23rd place, Ale Sanchez earned 18th place points with her season best of 1:55.15.

 

Shannon Kennedy won the C Final of the 100 breast with a lifetime best of 1:06.35.

 

Also scoring in the 100 backstroke were Stephanie Smith (20) and Reid Jackson (23).

 

The final event of the night was the 800 freestyle relay. The A team of Galen Broido, Allie Snyder, Alexandra van Dorsten and Allie Sanchez finished in 12th place with a time of 7:51.71. The B team earned 18th place points. That team consisted of Emily Sawyer, Jaymee Panian, Rachel Van Noordt and Brittany Thomas.

 

The final day of competition continues on Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
