Volleyball Finishes the Regular Season on the Road

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team is still fighting for a bid to next week's Big South Conference championships at Coastal Carolina. If the Bulldogs get into the tourney, they will have earned a spot as they'll finish the regular-season at Liberty and Radford.

Asheville (7-21, 3-9 BSC) faces Liberty Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. and then travels to Radford Saturday at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs are facing two of the top teams in the league this weekend. The Lady Flames were in first-place and unbeaten in league play until a rash of injuries caused them to lose their last three matches. The Lady Highlanders are currently in first place in league play and would win their second straight BSC regular-season with two wins this weekend against Gardner-Webb and Asheville.

Both matches will be video-streamed and can be seen on the Big South Network under the multimedia tag at uncabulldogs.com. In addition, the Liberty match can be seen on ESPN3.

The Bulldogs have plenty to play for, as well. After a thrilling five-set win over Winthrop last Saturday, Frederico Santos' team still has a chance to make the league tournament. Asheville is in ninth place and is a game behind Campbell (4-8) for the eighth and final spot in the Big South Tournament. The Lady Camels finish up at Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern. All Asheville needs is to finish in a tie with CU, and the Bulldogs would win the tie-breaker with their victory over the Lady Camels two weeks ago.

“We've got our work cut out for us,” stated Santos. “We face two of the best teams in the league on the road to end the season and need wins in both matches. However, we look forward to the challenge. Our team has gotten better and better each week and it should be an exciting weekend.”

Last weekend, the Bulldogs lost a five-set match to Presbyterian College at Justice Center on Friday but regrouped to win their final home match in five sets over Winthrop the next day Asheville trailed 13-12 in the fifth set but scored the final three points to claim the victory.

Freshman Katie Creger had a nice weekend for the Blue & White with a career-best 10 blocks against the Blue Hose and then had 12 kills in 17 attempts against the Eagles.

The Bulldogs played Liberty and Radford pretty close earlier this season at Justice Center. Asheville won the first set from both teams before falling in four games.

“We gave Liberty and Radford good matches here at Justice Center, and I believe we've improved since those matches,” added Santos.
