Volleyball on the Road for Two Matches

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team heads to the central part of the state of North Carolina this weekend for a pair of Big South Conference matches. Asheville journeys to High Point this evening for a 7 p.m. contest at the Millis Center and then heads to Campbell Saturday for a 4 p.m. match at Gore Arena.
Friday's match at High Point will be video-streamed and can be seen for free on the Big South Network.
The Bulldogs (5-19, 1-7 BSC) look to get back on the winning track after a disappointing weekend at home. Asheville fell last week to Charleston Southern, 3-1 last Friday and Coastal Carolina 3-0 on Saturday. The CSU loss was the toughest as the Bulldogs were two points away from winning the match in three sets but let late leads get away from then in the first and third sets.
A bright spot in defeat both days was the play of junior Catherine Fischer. She posted a career-high 22 kills on Friday against the Lady Bucs and then had a team-high 13 the next day vs. Coastal Carolina.
Asheville will be challenged in both places. High Point is 8-13 on the season and 2-6 in league play, while Campbell stands at 12-13 overall and 3-5 inside the Big South.
“We played well in spurts last weekend but didn't get the job when we had chances to win,” stated Bulldog coach Frederico Santos. “Both High Point and Campbell are very tough to beat at home, so we need to be at our best and most consistent to have a chance at winning.”
Asheville has three players averaging more than two kills per set in Shelby Erickson (2.50), Christine Lakatos (2.43) and Catherine Fischer (2.04). Bryn Pfeiffer tops the Bulldogs in digs at 3.17, while Lakatos is next with a 3.01 mark. Madison Vaughn averaged 1.00 block per set. Setter Katie Davis has played well the past few weeks and has been knocking on the door of a triple-double.
UNC Asheville returns home next weekend to finish its home schedule as the Bulldogs face Presbyterian College on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m., followed by a match with Winthrop the following day at 1 p.m.
