ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team returns to Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs host Gardner-Webb starting at 5 p.m.
Both teams really need a win. Asheville has dropped (1-5-1, 0-2-0 BSC) five straight after going unbeaten in its first two matches. The Runnin' Bulldogs (1-6-0, 0-1-0 BSC) have lost four consecutive matches after a 1-0 overtime win at USC Upstate.
The Bulldogs played at home on Wednesday and dropped a 1-0 decision to league foe Radford but showed improvement from a 3-0 loss at High Point on Saturday. Asheville came close to tying the match late with several good opportunities. The Highlanders are a good offensive club that the Bulldogs were able to keep off the scoreboard for most of the match.
“We are excited about a 5 p.m. kickoff this weekend versus Gardner Webb,” stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern. “I was pleased with our defensive effort against Radford, but hope that we can create more chances on goal this Saturday.”
Asheville looks to snap a six-game losing streak to the Runnin' Bulldogs. The Bulldogs last win over Gardner-Webb was a 4-2 Big South Tournament quarterfinal victory in 2008. Asheville has never beaten GWU in a Big South Conference regular-season match since the Runnin' Bulldogs joined the league in 2008. The Runnin' Bulldogs downed Asheville, 5-0 last year in Boling Springs.
Gardner-Webb lost a close 2-1 decision to Coastal Carolina Tuesday night at home.
Sophomore forward Jackson Allen leads the Dogs in scoring with three goals and six points. Paul Egle has a goal and two assists for four points. Senior goalkeeper Dan Jackson has played every minute of every match this season.
After Saturday's match, the Bulldogs go back on the road and travel to Big South-leader and nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina next Saturday in Conway
