ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams are back in action on Saturday morning when both squads head to Spartanburg for the Upstate Invitational. Action begins at 9 a.m. with the women's 5K race, while the men's 8K event starts at 9:30.

Both squads have had two weeks after participating in the Asheville Cross Country Carnival on Sept. 20.  Each team performed well in that meet. The Bulldog women's squad took second place, behind only national power Alabama. The men's team came in third place behind Alabama and Western Carolina.

Saturday's meet should be a challenging one for both teams as 17 teams are scheduled to participate.

“We're anxious to get back in competition this weekend,” declared Bulldog coach Jesse Norman. “This should be a good meet for us to compete in at USC Upstate on Saturday. We'll face some solid teams with excellent runners. This should help prepare us for our Big South Conference Championship at the end of the month.”

Both Bulldog teams had good performances throughout two weeks ago. Leading the way for the Bulldog women was junior Erin Dalton. She took 10th on the day with a time of 18:20.15. Freshman Casey Greenwalt was 11th with a time of 18:32 over the 5K course.

Sophomore Sarah Heisner came in 14th at 19:04.29. Phoebe Schneider took 15th with a mark of 19:05.32. Kasey Briggs came in 18th at 19:12.67. Adrian Etheridge took 20th at 19:17.67.  Asheville finished second with 68 points.

On the men's side, Andy Thornburg led the Bulldogs as he came in 16th at 26:03.11. Brent Schouler was 18th at 26:03.85, followed by Caleb Smith with a time of 26:08.32 in 19th.

Patrick Osborne finished 21st at 26:15.17. Skyler Winchester took 27th (26:40.50) and Nathan Kirse 28th (26:40.94).
