ASHEVILLE, N.C. – For the second straight Saturday, the UNC Asheville men's soccer teams faces a Big South rival that is nationally-ranked. The Bulldogs host #22 Winthrop at Greenwood Field on Saturday starting at 4:30 p.m.
Saturday's match can be seen for free on the Big South Network at uncabulldogs.com under the multimedia tag.
Last week, the Bulldogs (1-6-2, 0-3-1 BSC) traveled to #23 Coastal Carolina and fell, 4-0. This week they get the Eagles. Winthrop is 9-2 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in league play.
“We are excited to challenge ourselves against a top 25 team in Winthrop on Saturday,” said Bulldog coach Matt Kern. “They are a dynamic and well-coached team, and we will need to be organized defensively and get numbers forward to get the positive result we seek.”
The Bulldogs hope to get a result the last time a ranked team came to Asheville. Last year, Coastal Carolina was ranked sixth nationally when it invaded Greenwood Field before the Bulldogs pulled out a 1-0 victory.
Asheville will have its hands full with Winthrop. The Eagles downed the Dogs, 4-0 last year in Rock Hill. Winthrop has a six-game winning streak heading into Saturday's action and are third nationally in goals scored with a 2.64 average.
Jackson Allen leads the Bulldogs in scoring with three goals. Paul Egle has a goal and three assists for five points.
Senior goalkeeper Dan Jackson is second in the nation in saves this week with a 6.89 per game average and is seventh in total saves with 62.
