ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville senior libero Rachel Wells is the nation's leader in digs for the 2013 season.

Wells, a native of Statesville, led the nation with a 6.38 per set average. She accumulated 746 digs this season.

Wells was a first game All-Conference selection this year by the Big South. She was also named to the All-State team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association.

Her 746 digs is the second most for a single-season in school history. She becomes the first UNC Asheville volleyball player to lead a category in digs since Ilona Fekete led the nation in blocks back in 1990. Wells set a school-record with 54 digs in a match against Radford on Nov. 16.

“We're very proud of Rachel to lead the nation in digs,” stated Bulldog coach Frederico Santos. “She is one of the hardest workers I've ever coached, and Rachel was a player who got better and better with each year.  I can't say enough about what Rachel meant to our program.”
