ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Athletics Department is pleased to announce its first swimming schedule in 36 years.
First-year coach Elizabeth Lykins will lead the Bulldog women's swim program into competition starting in October for the 2012-12 season. The swimming program is being resumed at UNC Asheville for the first time since the school had a co-ed program from 1972-76.
The Bulldogs will host an exhibition meet on Sept. 22 at Justice Center Pool. Asheville's new era of swimming begins when the Bulldogs participate in the North Carolina Collegiate Kick-Off Classic in Greensboro the weekend of Oct. 5-6.
Asheville has a tri-meet with VMI and Gardner-Webb on Oct. 19 before heading to Radford the next day.
On Nov. 3, the Justice Center Pool will host its first meet since the 1975-76 season when the Bulldogs entertain Campbell starting at 5 p.m.
The Bulldogs make another trip to Radford as they'll compete in the Highlander Invitational (Nov. 15-17).
If any of Asheville's first-year swimmers qualify for the USA Swimming Nationals they'll be held in Austin Texas at the end of November (Nov. 29-Dec. 1).
In 2013, the Bulldogs travel to Georgia Southern (Jan. 19) and finish up the regular season with another home meet against North Carolina A&T on Jan. 26.
Lykins' first team will take part in Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Conference Championships from Feb. 21-23.
"I am very excited about this year's schedule," declared Lykins. "I'm looking forward to bringing competitive, collegiate swimming to the Asheville community.
"The CCSA is a tough conference and I believe our schedule will challenge this new team to become more competitive immediately," added Lykins.
