ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer team goes for its first win of the season this weekend but it won't be easy as the Bulldogs participate in the Furman Invitational.
Matt Kern's club will take on the Paladins Friday night at 7 p.m. before battling College of Charleston Sunday afternoon starting at Noon.
Asheville is 0-2-1 on the young season after dropping two matches last week at the James Madison/Fairfield Inn Invitational. The Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to St. Bonaventure last Friday, 1-0. Asheville led the host Dukes, 1-0 early in the second half before JMU scored the next four goals to win, 4-1.
"We played two really good teams last weekend and played some good soccer at times," admitted Kern. "The St. Bonaventure loss was tough because we really controlled play in the second half and came close to scoring several times.
"We battled hard against a great James Madison team," added Kern. "Our guys scored a great goal against the run of play early in the second half but we just couldn't keep them away the rest of the match."
Things don't get any easier this weekend. The Bulldogs face a Furman squad that is 2-1-1 on the year and is coming off victories against Rutgers and Princeton last weekend. College of Charleston is 1-1-1 this season against a tough schedule.
"We've got two tough matches to play," commented Kern. "Both teams are very good. They're both capable of not just winning the Southern Conference but going to the NCAA Tournament and winning a couple of matches.
"However, our guys have played some tough teams early in the season and hopefully that will prepare us for this weekend," Kern also said.
