Asheville Outlasts Gardner-Webb In Five Sets

COLUMBIA, S.C. - In a match that featured 17 tie scores and five lead changes the UNC Asheville volleyball team earned a 3-2 (18-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-18, 15-12) victory over Gardner-Webb in a non-Big South Conference match on Saturday morning at the 2011 Gamecock Invitational hosted by South Carolina.
The Bulldogs (3-3) were down 2-1 heading into the fourth set before rallying for two victories in a row to earn the match win. Meredith Foster recorded a career-high 16 kills in the match while hitting for a .538 clip against the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Senior Cindi Miller continued her impressive play posting 15 kills with junior Holly Shelton chipping in 10 to the Asheville total. Anna Moore tallied six blocks (two solo) and Alex Stewart recorded 22 digs on defense for the Blue & White, while setter Hallie Morse posted 41 assists directing the Asheville offense.
GWU (1-4) was paced by Laura Wilcox who tallied 16 kills and Lauren Evans who posted 11. Molly Rhyne added 10 kills to the Runnin' Bulldogs' total and Heather Feldman earned 39 assists over the five sets.
The match marked the second five-set victory of the season for the Bulldogs, who defeated Troy University 3-2 to open the season.
The Bulldogs will finish out the Gamecock Invitational later this evening when they will play host South Carolina at 7 p.m.
