ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer team will try and shake off a disappointing loss at VMI on Sunday when the Bulldogs travel to Appalachian State for a meeting with the regionally-ranked Mountaineers on Tuesday starting at 7 p.m.

Asheville (1-5-1) dropped a frustrating Big South Conference opener to the Keydets on Sunday, 2-1. The Bulldogs controlled play for much of the match but simply could not score the equalizer or take advantage of other scoring opportunities.

"It was a tough loss on Sunday to VMI but we don't have much to reflect on that match as we face a very good Appalachian State team on the road Tuesday night," commented second-year coach Matt Kern.

The Mountaineers are 4-2-1 on the season and are ranked seventh in the South Region. The Apps upset defending Big South champion Coastal Carolina in Conway, last weekend 1-0.

"We will have our hands full with Appalachian State," said Kern. "They have a good team and are playing very well right now. Any team that goes into Coastal Carolina and comes out with a victory has to be a good team. We'll need to play some good soccer."

The Bulldogs are in the middle of a four-game road trip. Asheville travels to Radford on Saturday before finishing up next Tuesday at national power North Carolina.

BULLDOG NOTES

Appalachian leads the all-time series with Asheville, 17-11-2. In the teams' last meeting, ASU came away with a 2-0 win on Nov. 3, 2009. The Apps were victorious in 2008 (1‑0), while the Bulldogs' last win came in a 2-1 game in 2007. In the first match of the series, ASU won 8-0 on Sept. 30, 1972.

Despite a 1-5-1 record, the Bulldogs have been out-scored by only a 13-9 margin. Four of Asheville's losses have been by one goal. The Bulldogs have scored in every match but one this season and that was a 1-0 defeat to St. Bonaventure.

Senior goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen has played every minute of every match this season. He has a 1.76 goals against average and posted one shutout.

Senior midfielder Jake Hagedorn leads Asheville in scoring with four goals and nine points.

Eight of the Bulldogs nine goals this season have come in the second half.
