09.01.2011 | Women's Volleyball
Asheville will play four matches in the tournament. The Bulldogs face Elon (9:30 a.m.) and Davidson (2:30 p.m.) on Friday and then take on Gardner-Webb (9:30 a.m.) and South Carolina (7 p.m.) on Saturday.
First-year coach Frederico Santos' team opened the season last weekend at the Samford/UAB Invitational and went 1-2. The Bulldogs rallied past Troy in five sets, before falling to co-hosts Samford and UAB in three sets.
"We are a work in progress," admitted Santos. "I was pleased with our effort last weekend but there are still areas to work on. We are simply trying to get better with each match."
Santos expects another tough tournament this weekend.
"We will have our hands full throughout the weekend at South Carolina," commented Santos. "Elon and Davidson are two solid Southern Conference teams. Gardner-Webb is much improved from last season. South Carolina is of course going to be very tough to beat at home."
Senior outside hitter Cindi Miller tops the Bulldogs in kills with a 2.91 per game set. Newcomer Anna Moore is at 2.64 kills, while Holly Shelton is at 2.45. Setter Haille Morse leads Asheville in blocks (0.64). Sophomore libero Alex Stewart leads the Bulldogs in digs (4.64).
