First-year coach Matt Kern's club opened the 2010 season with two matches at the University of Kentucky Invitational this past weekend. Asheville split those matches, losing 3-1 to IUPUI Friday night and then roaring past Eastern Illinois, 3-0 on Sunday. Jake Hagedorn led the Bulldogs with two goals in the win against EIU.
"We played extremely well against Eastern Illinois, especially in the first half," stated Kern. "Our guys scored some really nice goals, and we also did a solid job on defense. We want to build on Sunday's victory and continue to get better."
Asheville hosts Brevard College on Wednesday. The Tornados are 0-2-1 on the season but battled Big South foe Winthrop tough before falling 2-0 last week. The teams met for the first time last season with the Bulldogs winning, 3-0.
"We expect a real challenge from Brevard on Wednesday," commented Kern. "They've been in every match and gave Winthrop fits last week. We had to work hard to beat them last year, and tomorrow's match will be no exception. Brevard is a well-coached team."
Asheville placed three players on the Kentucky Invitational All-Tournament team. They were Connor Holzinger, Jake Sides and Hagedorn. Holzinger had assists on both of Hagedorn's goals.
NOTES - Asheville has six home matches this season and won't play at home again until Gardner-Webb on Sept.29...junior goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen earned his sixth career shutout on Sunday.
