Miller Named Big South Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville's Cindi Miller has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Volleyball Player of the Week, while High Point setter Maddie Simpson was tabbed the Freshman of the Week. Megan Bickford of Coastal Carolina picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors for matches played Sept. 20-26, the League announced today.
Miller, a junior from Decatur, Ind., put down 37 kills, averaged 4.62 kills per set and posted a .287 attack percentage to lead her Bulldogs to a 2-0 record in League play last week. The outside hitter got her week started with 13 kills on .394 hitting and 16 digs as UNC Asheville downed Gardner-Webb, 3-0, on Sept. 21. Three days later against Coastal Carolina, she notched 24 kills and hit .230 to go along with nine digs and one block in the Bulldogs' 3-2 win over the Chanticleers.
Simpson, a setter from Simi Valley, Calif., dished out 113 assists to average 12.56 helpers per set to guide her Panthers to a 2-0 record against Big South foes last week. At Winthrop on Sept. 24, Simpson posted a Big South season-high 61 assists as well as 14 digs and two blocks in the 3-2 win over the Eagles. The next day at Charleston Southern, she handed out 52 assists and came away with six digs and three blocks as High Pointed defeated the Lady Bucs, 3-1. Simpson is the only player in the League to amass 60 or more assists in a match this season.
Bickford, a senior from Olathe, Kan., posted 11 blocks and averaged 1.38 blocks per set as her Chanticleers posted a 1-1 record in Big South games last week. Bickford kicked her week off with three blocks, including one solo and three digs in Coastal Carolina's 3-0 win over Charleston Southern on Sept. 21. Against Asheville on Sept. 24, Bickford notched three solo blocks and five block assists to finish the match with eight total blocks against the Bulldogs. She also chipped in five digs and one ace against Asheville.
