ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team will continue its road trip to start the 2010 season this weekend when the Bulldogs participate in a tri-match at Western Carolina on Sunday. Asheville faces North Carolina A&T at 4 p.m., followed by a match with the Catamounts at 7 p.m.
The match with Western Carolina will be video-streamed and can be accessed at http://www.catamountsports.com/allaccess/.
Asheville (4-6) played well in spurts last weekend but lost all three matches at the ETSU Invitational. The Bulldogs played some strong teams in the tournament in Austin Peay, UNC Greensboro and ETSU. Asheville had chances to win each match but just couldn't finish a set or a match.
"We played some very good competition last weekend," stated Asheville coach Julie Torbett. "At times, we played some solid volleyball but we need to be more consistent. We're not far away, but we still have work to do and clean some things up."
Asheville will play North Carolina A&T for the first time since the 2005 season. The Bulldogs own a 12-1 series advantage against the Aggies but did lose to A&T in five sets the last time the teams played. Asheville defeated Western Carolina in three sets last year and have won the last two meetings against its mountain rival.
"We'll have two tough matches on Saturday," explained Torbett. "North Carolina A&T is always a tough team to play. Western Carolina has improved from last season and winning in Cullowhee is never easy."
The Bulldogs will finally get a chance to play at home next week. Asheville opens defense of its Big South Conference regular-season title when it hosts Gardner-Webb Tuesday night at Justice Center starting at 7 p.m. Next Saturday (Sept. 25) the Bulldogs battle defending BSC champ Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m.
