ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville and Mars Hill battled to a 1-1 tie in an exhibition men's soccer match at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs got a goal from junior Bryan George late in the first half, while the Lions got a goal from John Wyman in the 75th minute to tie the match. The teams did not play any overtime periods.

"We played much better in the second half than we did in the first half," commented first-year Asheville coach Matt Kern. "In the second half, we had some opportunities that we should have scored on but didn't do it.

"Mars Hill has a good club that really gave us fits throughout the day," added Kern. "This was a good exhibition match for both teams to prepare for the regular season. We have some work to do to get but there were plenty of positive signs, as well."

The Lions controlled much of the first half and hit the goal post in the first minute of the match. The visitors out-shot the home team, 8-6 in the opening half.

However, Asheville would get the only goal of the half in the 41st minute. The Bulldogs were enjoying their first corner kick of the match as Connor Holzinger sent a pass into the goal area. George headed it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Asheville lead at the 41:28 mark.

In the second half, the Bulldogs controlled play and just missed getting a second goal as MHC goalkeeper Zac Scott made four saves.

But the Lions would get the equalizer at 75:57 when Wyman hit a shot from 20 yards out that floated into the back of the net to knot the match at 1-1.

The Bulldogs play another exhibition match on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in downtown Asheville when they face Appalachian State starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be free.

"Appalachian State will be a tough match for us, as well," stated Kern. "Hopefully, we'll learn some things from today that will make us better in that match. I'm looking forward to playing at Memorial Stadium as we should have a great crowd on hand. It should be a great night."
