Shelton Named Defensive Player Of The Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Winthrop's Becca Toor has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Volleyball Player of the Week, while Maddie Simpson of High Point was tabbed the Freshman of the Week. Holly Shelton of UNC Asheville picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors for matches played Oct. 4-10, the League announced today.
Shelton, a sophomore from Brevard, N.C., posted 18 blocks to help the Bulldogs to a 2-1 record in League play last week. The middle hitter helped get the Bulldogs off to a winning start on Oct. 5 as she posted six against Presbyterian College. Shelton stayed hot at the net in her next match as she notched five blocks in Asheville's 3-2 win over Charleston Southern on Oct. 8. The next day against Winthrop, she turned away seven Eagle attacks.
Toor, a junior from Rotonda West, Fla., hit .434, averaged 4.0 kills per set and finished with 28 kills to fuel her Eagles to a 2-0 record in Big South play last week. The middle hitter got her week started with 16 kills on .560 hitting and added two blocks as Winthrop downed Coastal Carolina, 3-0, on Oct. 5. Four days later against Asheville, Toor put away 12 kills and hit .321 with one dig and three blocks in Winthrop's 3-1 win over the Bulldogs.
Simpson, a setter from Simi Valley, Calif., notched 84 assists to average 12.0 assists per set as her Panthers picked up two Big South wins last week. Against Gardner-Webb on Oct. 8, Simpson dished out 33 helpers to go along with two aces and six digs. She followed that effort with 51 assists, four digs and four blocks as the Panthers knocked off Presbyterian College the next day. The honor marks her third Freshman of the Week plaudit this season.
