ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams open the 2009 season at the Western Carolina Invitational on Friday. The women's 2-mile race starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's 5K race at 6 p.m.

Third-year coach Jesse Norman is excited to finally start the season.

"We're quite excited about the season beginning," stated Norman. "I believe the meet at Western Carolina will be a good meet to see how we stack up in the Big South early in the year. Gardner-Webb and Winthrop will be there and should provide good competition."

The women's team has 13 runners on its roster this year. Norman has been pleased with the work of senior Katie Olert in the early going along with his five freshmen.

"Our freshmen have shined in workouts so far," admitted Norman. "I also like the job Katie Olert has done in the preseason."

The men's squad will bring seven runners over to Western Carolina on Friday. Norman has liked what he's seen from sophomores Sam Maynard and Kent Rankin plus freshman Chris Murray.

"Sam and Kent have worked hard and posted good times," commented Norman. "Chris Murray has done a solid job as a freshman so far."
