Men's Soccer Faces Catawba in Exhibition Match on Monday

Men's Soccer Hosts Brevard on Friday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer team plays its opening home match of the season Friday afternoon when the Bulldogs host neighboring Brevard for the first time ever at Greenwood Field. Admission is free. The match will be video-streamed and can be watched for a small fee at www.bigsouthsports.com.

Asheville opened the season at top-ranked UNC Chapel Hill Tuesday night and fell 5-0. Despite the loss, Bulldog head coach Steve Cornish saw a lot of positives against the Tar Heels.

"We played some good soccer for most of the match against North Carolina," stated Cornish. "We simply ran out of gas in the final 10 minutes and they (UNC) made us pay for it in a big way. Our lads battled hard and if we get efforts like that this season we'll be OK."

Brevard is 0-2 on the young season after a difficult 3-2 overtime loss to Pfeiffer on Monday. The Tornadoes are a dangerous club, according to Cornish. Last season, they took Big South champion Winthrop to overtime before losing.

"We have a great deal of respect for Brevard and its program," declared Cornish. "I talked with the Winthrop coaching staff last season, and they told me they believed that Brevard was one of their toughest matches of the season. We will need to have a great effort on Friday from our team to post a result."

The Bulldogs play their next three matches away from home after the Brevard game. Asheville travels to Wofford Monday night and then plays in the Davidson Invitational the weekend of Sept. 11. The Dogs battle Davidson on Sept. 11 and take on Georgetown for the first time ever on Sept. 13. Asheville's next home match is with UNC Upstate on Sept. 16.
