Asheville (3-5-1) played on Sunday and fell at #20 Kentucky, 3-1. The game was scoreless at halftime before Bryan Bartels stunned the Wildcat crowd with a goal in the 50th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
However, UK was awarded a penalty kick three minutes later and tied the match at 1-1 on a goal from Jase Griffiths. The Wildcats got the go-ahead goal from Josh McCrary to lead 2-1 one minute later. Kentucky added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to seal the victory.
"We played hard and battled against a talented squad but came up a little short," stated Asheville coach Steve Cornish. "Our lads should learn from this match and make us better as we get into Big South Conference play."
The Bulldogs will have a stiff challenge against ETSU. The Buccaneers are in their second year of existence but are already showing signs of having a high-quality program. ETSU is 1-3-2 on the season but its last loss was a 2-1 overtime decision at North Carolina last week.
"We're quite impressed with ETSU," declared Cornish. "They have a well-coached team and were in every match last season plus this year. We'll have to work hard to come out of this match with a result."
Asheville begins Big South Conference play this weekend against High Point at Greenwood Field starting at 2 p.m.
