Volleyball Opens Big South Conference Play at Home Against Gardner-Webb on Tuesday
09.21.2009 | Women's Volleyball
Prior to the match, the Bulldogs will honor senior libero Raquel Miotto. She became the Big South and school's all-time leader in digs in a match against Wofford on Sept. 12. Miotto enters Tuesday's action with 2,278 digs. She leads the Big South Conference in digs with a 5.23 per game average.
Asheville is off to its best start in four years as the Bulldogs enter Tuesday's match with an 11-5 overall record. Julie Torbett's club went 3-1 at the South Carolina State Spikefest this past weekend. Asheville knocked off Winston-Salem State and Hampton in three sets and then picked up its first ever win over a Big East foe when the Bulldogs downed Providence in four sets. Asheville lost to Wofford in the final match of the day but finished 3-1 in the tournament.
The Bulldogs' great start to the 2009 season is even more impressive when you realize Asheville has played just one home match this season. The Bulldogs routed Western Carolina back on Sept. 2 in three sets.
Gardner-Webb is 5-9 on the season but is coming off an exciting 3-2 win over Davidson on Saturday as the Runnin' Bulldogs won the fifth set, 16-14.
The Bulldogs have enjoyed a good team effort throughout the season. Senior Lauren Ficker has been named Big South Player of the Week twice and is second in the league in hitting percentage at .331. She's seventh in kills per game at 3.05. Miotto not only leads the league in digs but service aces (0.61), as well.
