Volleyball To Compete at South Carolina Spikefest This Weekend

The Bulldogs (8-4) are off to the best start in four years. Asheville will try and continue to build momentum for Big South Conference play this weekend. Julie Torbett's team will take on Winston-Salem State at 1 p.m. and Hampton at 5 p.m. on Friday. Saturday's action will have the Bulldogs battling Providence at 9 a.m., followed by a match with Wofford at 1 p.m.
Two of the opponents this weekend will be familiar for Asheville. The Bulldogs faced Winston-Salem State and Wofford last weekend in Winston-Salem. Torbett's club routed Winston-Salem State in three sets last Friday before bowing to Wofford in five close sets on Saturday.
This weekend's tournament at South Carolina State is the last tournament the Bulldogs play in before the Big South Conference Tournament in November. Asheville begins its Big South Conference schedule this Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Gardner-Webb at Justice Center.
Senior middle blocker Lauren Ficker has been named Big South Player of the Week for the past two weeks, while senior libero Raquel Miotto has been named Big South Defensive Player of the Week for two straight weeks. Miotto became the Big South and school's all-time leader in career digs last week. She will add to her total of 2,188 digs this weekend.
NOTES - Julie Torbett is the Big South's all-time leader in coaching victories with 268...Asheville has won six of its last eight matches, despite only playing one home match...the Bulldogs have won at least one set in the four matches they lost...Asheville has beaten six teams this year in three sets.
