Men's Soccer Team Hosts USC Upstate on Wednesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer team returns home to face regional foe USC Upstate Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field starting at 4 p.m. Admission is free. The match will be video-streamed and can be seen for a small fee at www.bigsouthsports.com.

The Bulldogs (1-3-1) lost twice last weekend at the Davidson Invitational. Asheville fell on Friday to Davidson, 2-0 and then battled national power Georgetown before losing, 2-0 on Sunday.  The Dogs placed two players on the all-tournament team at Davidson with goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen and midfielder Connor Holzinger receiving the honors.

"At times, our lads played some very good soccer against two excellent teams," commented Bulldog coach Steve Cornish. "We hit the post a couple of times and just missed scoring. One goal in either match could have changed things dramatically.

"Our effort was superb in both matches, and our young team continues to get better with each match," added Cornish.

Asheville faces a USC Upstate (0-3-0) team that has played hard in each match this season but not experienced a victory. Each of the Rifles three losses have come by one goal, including a 3-2 defeat to Davidson in overtime.

"USC Upstate is a fine club. They have had some bad luck with their results so far and could just as easily be 3-0," stated Cornish. "We will need an excellent effort by the lads on Wednesday to have a chance at a result."

The match with USC Upstate starts a busy stretch for the Bulldogs as they'll play three games in five days. Asheville travels to Nashville this weekend to compete in the Hyatt Place Select Invitational. They'll take on Lipscomb Friday at 7:30 p.m. CST and then play Belmont on Sunday at Noon CST.
