09.11.2009 | Men's Soccer
UNC Asheville (1-2-1) out-shot Davidson (2-0-0) 15-13 in the match and held a 9-8 advantage in corner kicks but the Bulldogs could not get a shot past Wildcat goalkeeper Chip Sanders.
"The early goal really put our backs against the wall," said Asheville head coach Steve Cornish. "I thought we played well and we were dangerous at times but playing on the road against a good team, you just can't afford to fall behind early.
David Wood led the Bulldogs with four shots while Bryan George fired three shots. Conner Holzinger, Jake Hagedorn, and David Parra each took two shots for Asheville. Lassi Hurskainen made six saves for the Bulldogs while Sanders made five saves for the Wildcats.
Pilgrim scored his first goal of the year on a header to the near post from two yards out. He received service from Mark Millard and Caskey on what turned out to be the game-winner.
Caskey who had three points on the match was fouled attempting to drive across the box and was taken down from behind by a Bulldog defender just inside the penalty area in the 70th minute. His successful penalty kick was his second goal of the season.
Both teams return to action at the Adidas Classic on Sunday. Asheville will face Georgetown at 1 p.m. Davidson will face Coastal Carolina at 3:30 p.m. Georgetown blanked Coastal 3-0 on Friday.
