Men's Soccer to Face Davidson & Georgetown This Weekend
09.10.2009 | Men's Soccer
Asheville is 1-1-1 on the season after tying Wofford 0-0 on Monday night. The tie was a good result for the Bulldogs as they were missing five starters with injuries but still managed to earn a point.
"We're starting to get a little healthier, but we still won't be 100 percent when we face Davidson on Friday," stated Bulldog head coach Steve Cornish. "Our lads face two tough tasks this weekend. Davidson and Georgetown are two very good teams that will make it tough to post a result."
The Wildcats are 1-0-0 on the season after edging USC Upstate 3-2 in overtime last weekend. Georgetown is 1-1-1 on the season and is coming off a 2-0 win over nationally-ranked UCLA on Sunday.
"Davidson is traditionally one of the better teams in the Southern Conference and it is always very difficult to win there," declared Cornish. "Georgetown just beat one of the top teams in the nation in UCLA. We have our work cut out for us but we just played at Chapel Hill, so we know what to do against strong opposition."
The big news from the Wofford match was the play of red-shirt goalkeeper Derrick Filip. Filip made his first career start against the Terriers as starting goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen was out with an injury. Filip made 10 saves, including stopping a penalty kick in the first half.
"We've always had confidence in Derrick, and he showed us why at Wofford," said Cornish. "He was sensational and allowed us to get a result."
