ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Volleyball team was selected third in the Big South Conference Preseason Poll that was announced by the league on Tuesday. Senior libero Raquel Miotto and junior outside hitter Kelsey Benorden were honored by being named to the Big South Preseason All-Conference Team.

The Bulldogs finished with 18-14 overall record in 2008 and came in fourth place with an 8-8 mark. Two-time defending champion Liberty is the pick to win the Big South Conference championship. Coastal Carolina is the preseason pick to finish in second place.

"We're happy to be picked third but hopefully we'll finish a little higher than that before the year is over," commented UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett. "Liberty certainly deserved to be picked first as it has most of its team returning. Coastal Carolina beat us twice last season and got to the championship match."

Torbett was happy to have two players make the preseason team.

"I'm glad Raquel and Kelsey earned some recognition for what they've accomplished during their careers," declared Torbett. "We look forward to both of them having great seasons in 2009."

Liberty setter Kallie Corbin was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year. Rounding out the team were Liberty's Chelaine McCarty and Nicki Scripko, Coastal Carolina's Chelsey Kimes and Charleston Southern's Amanda Hill.

The rest of the poll had High Point picked fourth, followed by Winthrop in fifth. Presbyterian was selected to finish sixth. Charleston Southern came in seventh, followed by Radford and Gardner-Webb.

The Bulldogs open the season at the North Carolina Central Tournament the weekend of Aug. 28-29. Asheville's first home match is on Sept. 2 against Western Carolina.
