Holly Shelton Named Volleyball Freshman of the Week

Shelton, from Brevard, N.C., got her collegiate career off to a hot start as she put down 31 kills and a .389 percentage at the net in helping UNC Asheville to a 2-2 record at the N.C. Central Tournament. She started all four games for the Bulldogs, and in her first match she put down 10 kills, hit .571 and posted one block against UNC Wilmington on Aug. 28. In game two of the first day's matches, Shelton posted six kills and a .625 percentage at the net in UNC Asheville's three set win over South Carolina State. Against Elon on Aug. 29, she put away six kills and followed with nine kills to go along with a .353 hitting percentage in Asheville's 3-2 win over The Citadel.
Also earning Big South honors this week were High Point's Megan Smith who posted 69 kills, hit .358 and averaged 4.31 kills per set to earn Player of the Week honors. Coastal Carolina's Jill Nyhof posted 18 blocks in three matches for the Chanticleers for Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
UNC Asheville will return to the court on Wednesday as the Bulldogs play their home opener against Western Carolina at 7 p.m. The match can be seen on the Big South Network.
