ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team opens the 2009 season at the North Carolina Central Invitational with four matches this weekend.

The Bulldogs begin play on Friday against UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m., followed by a match vs. South Carolina State at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Asheville battles The Citadel at 1 p.m., followed by match with Elon at 5 p.m.

Julie Torbett's team has enjoyed a good preseason and is anxious for the year to start.

"We're tired of practicing against each other. We're ready to play a match," declared Torbett.  "I was pleased with our effort in the Blue-White scrimmage Tuesday night and anxious to see how we play in a match."

Torbett expects some very competitive matches at North Carolina Central on Friday and Saturday.

"We should have four challenging matches," commented Torbett. "UNC Wilmington has a new coach and should be much improved from last season. South Carolina State will be scrappy. Elon beat us pretty easily last year and should be tough again."

The match against The Citadel will be a special one for Torbett. The Citadel Bulldogs are coached by former UNC Asheville great Cally Geiger. Geiger was one of Torbett's first recruits and enjoyed an excellent career for the Bulldogs from 1995-98. She is in her third year at The Citadel.

"I'm looking forward to seeing Cally again," said Torbett. "I know she's done a great job coaching, and we better be ready to play when we face them."
