Patrick Tate Signs With Charleston Battery

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Former UNC Asheville men's soccer player Patrick Tate has signed a professional contract with the Charleston Battery of the United Soccer League First Division on Thursday morning.

The Charlotte native was spotted by the Charleston coaching staff when the Bulldogs played in the Big South Conference Tournament last November at Coastal Carolina. He was invited to try out for the Battery and after a series of work-outs, Tate was offered a two-year deal.

“I'm tremendously happy for Patrick,” stated UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “He is a lad who has worked very hard and been a consistent player for our program since joining us from East Carolina. I believe he has a chance to have a good career for Charleston and be a contributor.”

Tate is delighted to playing pro soccer.

“I'm really pleased to be with the Battery,” commented Tate. “This is a dream come true to play pro soccer. I'm anxious to contribute in any way I can.”

Tate was a three-year starter for the Bulldogs in both the back and midfield. He is expected to play in the back for Charleston. Tate transferred to UNC Asheville in the spring of 2006 from East Carolina when the Pirates program was dropped.

He finished his career with four goals and two assists, earning second-team all-conference honors this past year. Tate scored one of the biggest goals in school history in 2007 when his overtime goal gave the Bulldogs a stunning 2-1 victory over ACC foe Clemson. It was Asheville's first ever win over an ACC program.

He will be with the team only on weekends until he finishes school in May. Tate will graduate with a degree in Business Management.

“I'm excited about getting my degree in May,” said Tate.
