ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer team will finish the regular season at home on Saturday afternoon against Liberty starting at 2 p.m. The match will be video-streamed and can be seen for a small fee at www.bigsouthsports.com.
Saturday's match at Greenwood Field has been designated as a MILES for MYLES event. All event staff will be asked to make a $3 donation for this event.
MILES for MYLES is an initiative designed to perpetuate the legacy of leadership of the late NCAA President Myles Brand and to carry on with his valiant fight against pancreatic cancer. All colleges and universities across the country have been asked to participate on November 7th.
Developed by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), which has been joined by the WBCA, NCAA and NACDA as partners, MILES for MYLES provides an opportunity for the collegiate athletic community to demonstrate its solidarity and to raise awareness and contribute funds for cancer research, specifically in the area of pancreatic cancer.
All proceeds go to: Coaches vs. Cancer, The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund and The Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
The Bulldogs (6-10-2, 2-4-1 BSC) look to snap a four-game losing streak in the match against the Flames. Asheville also looks for its first win over Liberty since the 2002 season. The teams did play to a 0-0 tie last season.
The Bulldogs fell to Coastal Carolina last Saturday, 2-1 and then dropped a 2-0 road decision at Appalachian State on Tuesday night.
"We're not playing badly but when we make mistakes the ball has gotten into the back of the net," explained Asheville coach Steve Cornish. "The last four matches have seen us play some very good teams. We've played well in parts of those matches, but we need to put 90 minutes together."
Liberty is having a solid season. The Flames are 9-4-3 overall and 3-2-2 in league play. They have been ranked in the South Region throughout the season.
"Liberty has a very good team yet again this year," commented Cornish. "They are very strong defensively and can score quickly on you. Our lads must be at their best to produce a result on Saturday."
The Bulldogs are looking to set some momentum for next week's Big South Conference Tournament at High Point (Nov. 12-15).
"The league is quite balanced this season, but we believe we can play with anybody," stated Cornish. "We just need to put 90 minutes together."
