Volleyball Stays Unbeaten in Big South With 3-0 Win Over High Point

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Kelsey Benorden and Lauren Ficker combined for 23 kills as UNC Asheville remained unbeaten in Big South Conference play with a 3-0 victory over visiting High Point Friday night. The Bulldogs won the match 25-21, 25-17, 25-18.
Benorden posted a game-high 12 kills for Asheville (16-5, 5-0 BSC), while Ficker added 11. Raquel Miotto had 16 digs for the Bulldogs. Bridget Holliday contributed 13.
The Panthers were led by Courtney Johnk with nine kills. Julie Hershkowitz led the High Point defense with 12 digs.
"We played well tonight against a good High Point team," commented Asheville coach Julie Torbett. "We were focused and got key points when we had to have them. This was a good victory."
The first set had nine ties and four lead changes until a late 4-0 run by the Bulldogs gave them some breathing room. Ficker had four kills in the opening set as Asheville won the first set 25-21.
In the second set, Asheville ran off six straight points to race to an 18-10 lead. Benoden had five kills in the set as the Bulldogs won 25-17.
Sophomore Cindi Miller led Asheville in the third set with five kills. The home team went on a 9-1 run at one point to lead 19-10. The Panthers got three kills from Stephanie Wallin to creep back to 22-17, but two kills from Benorden finished the match and gave the Bulldogs their fifth straight win. Asheville hit .312 in the final set, while High Point had nine hitting errors.
The Bulldogs host defending Big South Conference champion Liberty Saturday afternoon at Justice Center starting at 2 p.m. High Point plays at Gardner-Webb Saturday at 4 p.m.
