SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The UNC Asheville volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday at the USC Upstate Classic and finished second in the tournament.

The Bulldogs (3-3) fell to Wofford in four sets in the first match of the day. The Terriers won the match 25-14, 27-25, 23-25, 25-14.

Asheville bounced back to roar past USC Upstate in three sets in the final match of the day. Julie Torbett's club won 25-18, 25-19, 25-21.

The Bulldogs placed two players on the all-tournament team in Kelsey Benorden and Lauren Ficker.

“We bounced back after a tough loss against Wofford to play well against USC Upstate,” commented Torbett. “We have got to be more consistent in our matches but it was nice to go 2-1 in the tournament.”

In the Wofford loss, Benorden led Asheville with 15 kills and 12 digs. Ficker added 14 kills, while senior Heather Burns had 10 kills and two blocks. The Bulldogs were hurt by 22 attack errors as they only hit .188 for the match.

“We simply made too many errors against Wofford,” declared Torbett.

The Bulldogs had little trouble with USC Upstate. Asheville hit .321 in the match and had seven blocks. Burns, Benorden and Ficker all posted 11 kills each. Freshman Cindi Miller had a strong match with nine kills and hit .500 for the day. Burns had four blocks.

“We played much better against USC Upstate in every phase of the game,” explained Torbett. “I thought we really did a nice job blocking and our hitting was aggressive.”

UNC Asheville is off until next Friday when it competes in a tournament at N.C. State. The Bulldogs play William & Mary at 10 a.m. and Norfolk State at 5 p.m.
