RALEIGH, N.C.?Kelsey Benorden recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 kills and 18 digs but its was not enough as William & Mary rallied to a 3-2 victory over UNC Asheville in the first match of the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic on Friday.

Benorden led three Bulldogs (3-4) with double figure kills as Heather Burns and Cindi Miller each had 10 kills. Raquel Miotto had 25 digs in the match to lead all players.

Asheville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match taking the opening set 25-21 and the second set 25-18. The tide in the match began to turn as William & Mary (4-3) took the final seven points of the third set to win 25-16. The Tribe used another 7-0 run in the fourth set to break open a 5-5 tie and take a 12-5 lead on the way to a 25-22 victory.

In the deciding set, W&M scored the first five points and then had to hold off a late Asheville charge to win 15-11.

“William & Mary is a very strong team,” said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. “They made an adjustment midway through the match but we fought hard against a much larger team. I was proud of our blocking and our defense today. We really improved in those two areas from last weekend and if we continue to improve we will be fine.”

Erin Skipper led all hitters in the match with 23 kills on 57 swings for the Tribe. Katie McCarney added 16 kills while Bryana Carey and Ginny Bray added 11 and 10 kills respectively.

Asheville held a 10-5 blocking advantage as Burns collected seven blocks (two solo and five assisted). W&M held an 89-76 digging advantage while hitting .182 to Asheville's .175.

Lauren Ficker had four service aces for the Dogs who held a slight 8-6 serving advantage.

Asheville will try to bounce back against Norfolk State at 5 p.m. while W&M will face N.C. State at 7 p.m. in match two of the tournament.
