ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? A home game with Kentucky, a road match at North Carolina plus a tournament at Elon highlights the 2008 UNC Asheville men's soccer schedule. The 17-game schedule was announced today by Bulldog head coach Steve Cornish.

“We're excited about the schedule but it is certainly challenging,” commented Cornish. “Our non-conference matches will certainly prepare our lads for the Big South Conference portion of our schedule.”

The Bulldogs play two exhibition games this season. Asheville hosts King College at Greenwood Field on Aug. 21 and then takes on first-year program East Tennessee State in a special exhibition match on Aug. 23 at Memorial Stadium near downtown Asheville.

“We're pleased to play a match at Memorial Stadium,” declared Cornish. “It should be fun to play a match under the lights in Asheville.”

Asheville opens the season on Sept. 6 at home against Appalachian State. The Bulldogs will participate in the Elon Invitational the following weekend. Cornish's club battles Elon (Sept. 12) before taking on Southern Conference power UNC Greensboro (Sept. 14).

A home match against Longwood (Sept. 16) is followed by a trip to Nashville for two matches. The Bulldogs face Belmont (Sept. 19) and Lipscomb (Sept. 21).

Asheville returns to Greenwood Field to host Kentucky (Sept. 27) before heading to North Carolina (Sept. 30) for a match with the Tar Heels.

October begins with Big South Conference matches. The Bulldogs entertain VMI (Oct. 4) and then play at league newcomer Presbyterian (Oct. 7). Asheville has a two-game homestand with league foes Radford (Oct. 11) and Gardner-Webb (Oct. 15).  The Bulldogs travel to Coastal Carolina (Oct. 22) before coming home to host Winthrop (Oct. 25).

The Bulldogs finish the regular season with a road match at High Point (Oct. 28), a home match against non-conference foe Wofford (Nov. 1) and travel to defending league champion Liberty (Nov. 8).

The 2008 Big South Conference Tournament will be held at Coastal Carolina (Nov. 13-16).
