UNC Asheville Announces 2008 Volleyball Schedule: Justice Center to Host Big South Tourney in November

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Three in-season tournaments and hosting the Big South Conference Tournament highlights the 2008 UNC Asheville volleyball schedule. Head Coach Julie Torbett released the 30-match schedule on Monday.

 

“We believe this is a challenging but competitive schedule,” stated Torbett. “We believe we can be very competitive with this year's schedule and the matches will prepare us for Big South Conference play.

 

“It is always exciting to host the conference tournament,” added Torbett. “We hope to use that to our advantage and look forward to playing three more home matches during that weekend.”

 

The Big South Conference Tournament is scheduled to be played the weekend of Nov. (21-23). Ticket sales for the tournament will go on sale in the fall. For more information on the tournament and other UNC Asheville athletics information, go to www.uncabulldogs.com.

 

The Bulldogs open the season in a tournament at North Carolina Central. Asheville plays Elon (Aug. 29), Florida Gulf Coast (Aug. 29) and Maine (Aug. 30).

 

Torbett's team plays at the USC Upstate Tournament the following weekend. The Bulldogs square off against Hampton (Sept. 5), Wofford (Sept. 6) and USC Upstate (Sept. 6).

 

Asheville participates in its final tournament at N.C. State the weekend of Sept. 12-13. The Bulldogs play William & Mary and Norfolk State (Sept. 12) before taking on the Wolfpack the next day (Sept. 13).

 

A match at mountain rival Western Carolina (Sept. 16) is followed by a tri-match at UNC Wilmington (Sept. 20) with Virginia Tech (Sept. 20).

 

The Bulldogs play their home opener North Carolina A&T (Sept. 23) before opening up Big South Conference play against High Point (Sept. 26) at Justice Center.

 

Asheville is at Winthrop (Oct. 4) and then hosts conference newcomer Presbyterian (Oct. 7). The Bulldogs are on the road for their next three matches as they'll travel to league foes Radford (Oct. 10), Liberty (Oct. 11) and Gardner-Webb (Oct. 14).

 

Asheville will then play six of its next seven matches at home. The Bulldogs host Charleston Southern (Oct. 17) and Coastal Carolina (Oct. 18). Asheville journeys to High Point (Oct. 25) but is then home for four consecutive matches against Winthrop (Nov. 1) Gardner-Webb (Nov. 4), Liberty (Nov. 7) and Radford (Nov. 8).

 

Torbett's club finishes the regular season on the road at Presbyterian (Nov. 11), Coastal Carolina (Nov. 14) and Charleston Southern (Nov. 15).
