ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Track and Field Program recognized Gene Rainey, former UNC Asheville Political Science professor, and Our Next Generation Youth Centers for his many years of past support and donation towards equipment for the school's Track and Field program on Friday.

“We are extremely grateful to Gene Rainey for his generous support both in the past and today's contribution,” commented UNC Asheville Athletics Director Janet Cone.

Our Next Generation Youth Centers and the UNC Asheville Track and Field Program have co-sponsored the Laps for Kids walk to benefit area non-profit organizations in the past with a portion of the proceeds being used to provide support to the Bulldog Track and Field program.

It is with support like this that the Track and Field program here at UNC Asheville will be able to move closer to their goal of a conference championship. We appreciate the support Our Next Generation has given to the Track and Field team over the years,” stated Jesse Norman, Men's and Women's Track and Field head coach.

Our Next Generation is a non-profit organization established to train “at risk” youth in construction skills, while building affordable housing. Sixty young people have been trained and a dozen houses built or rehabbed. Also, one youth center has been established.

The UNC Asheville Athletics Department is currently raising funds to renovate its track and field faciltiy to NCAA/IAAF standards so that the Karl Straus Track can be used to host intercollegiate and community track meets.
