ASHEVILLE, N.C.?The 2008 Big South Volleyball Championships will be held at the Justice Center on the campus of UNC Asheville Friday, Nov. 21-Saturday, Nov. 23. The tournament seeding was announced on Sunday by the conference office.
Host UNC Asheville (16-13, 8-8 Big South) earned the #4 seed and will face #5 seed Winthrop (11-18, 7-9 Big South) in the final quarterfinal of the day at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
The Bulldogs and Eagles split their two regular season meetings with both teams winning in five sets on their home floor. Winthrop has knocked Asheville out of the tournament in each of the last three seasons and has beaten Asheville in the Big South Title game twice in the last five years. In that same five year stretch, Asheville has reached the semifinals four times.
Liberty (22-8, 13-3), High Point (25-6, 13-3) and Coastal Carolina (25-8, 13-3) all finished in the tie for first place in the conference and each earn regular season co-champions recognition. Liberty earns the top seed in the tournament and will face eighth seeded Gardner-Webb (5-26, 3-13) at 5 p.m. Friday.
The opening day begins at Noon with second seed High Point facing seventh seed Radford (9-18, 4-12). Then third seed Coastal Carolina faces sixth seed Charleston Southern (16-17, 5-11).
The tournament will continue on Saturday with semifinal matches at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The finals will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. The tournament champion receives the Big South's automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.
