ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville volleyball team picked up a big win on the road last week when the Bulldogs stunned Big South leader High Point. UNC Asheville looks to pick up another big win on Saturday at home when the Bulldogs host league rival Winthrop at Justice Center starting at 2 p.m. Admission is $5. The match will be video-streamed on The Edge at www.bigsouthsports.com for a small fee.
Julie Torbett's club has battled through some injury issues through the season but has won two its last three matches. All three of those matches have gone five sets. Last Saturday at High Point, the Bulldogs became the first team in league play to knock the Panthers off. HPU had won its first nine league matches prior to playing Asheville last Saturday.
“It was a great win last Saturday at High Point,” stated Torbett. “I thought it was a true team effort as everyone who played made a key contribution.
“However, we've got another challenge on Saturday against Winthrop,” added Torbett. “We haven't had much luck against them in the past few years. We lost a tough one to them last month (a five-set loss) at Winthrop. We're going to need the same kind of intensity and effort we had against High Point on Saturday against Winthrop.”
The Eagles are 9-13 overall and 5-4 in league play. UNC Asheville has an 11-11 overall record and 3-6 league worksheet. The match with Winthrop starts a four-game homestand for the Bulldogs. Asheville is home Tuesday night against Gardner-Webb and then host Liberty and Radford next weekend.
Libero Raquel Miotto has been named Libero of the Week for three straight weeks by the Big South. She leads the team in digs with a 4.98 per set average. Sophomore Kelsey Benorden has a 3.42 kills per game average and that tops the Bulldogs.
