UNC Asheville Athletics Raising Money for Karl Straus Track
08.07.2007 | Track and Field
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Athletics Department is in the process of raising money to renovate and expand the Karl Straus Track that is located on the school's campus behind the Justice Center and the Health and Fitness Center.
The present track has been in existence for almost 25 years and has been used by thousands of people. The Karl Straus Track serves as the training and competition facility for the UNC Asheville's men's and women's track and field programs. However, with years of deterioration and new Big South Conference and NCAA regulations, the programs have not been able to host a home meet in more than seven years.
The Karl Straus Track Renovations and Expansions are intended to establish UNC Asheville's Track and Field Program as one of the highest caliber in the Big South Conference in terms of facility use and program content. The renovations and expansions are intended to improve the image and capacity of the track facility which will make it one of the best environments for fans and participants.
The total amount of money that needs to be raised is approximately two million dollars. The renovations and expansions include the resurfacing of the track and relocation of the pits and runways. It includes the construction of a grandstand that will seat more than 700 people along with a press box, concession stand and storage and timing room. Renovations of existing locker rooms and the purchasing of new track and field equipment will complete the project.
A web-site has been created to help fans support the project. It is called www. uncatrackpledge.com. On this site, you will be able to see how much has been raised, artists drawings of the new site and the different ways to support the project.
