ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Head Volleyball Coach Julie Torbett has announced the signing of Jenna Dover, Kelsey Benorden, and Rachel Guinane who will join the Bulldogs in the fall of 2007.
The Bulldogs signed a pair of players from Tennessee beginning with Jenna Dover. She is a 6-1 Right Side Hitter from West High School in Knoxville, Tenn., and was an All-District and All Tournament selection for AAA. She played her club ball for Smoky Mountain Volleyball Club along with teammate Benorden.
"I am excited to start working with Jenna," said Torbett. "She is a raw athlete that will make improvements quickly in our program. I see her as a major contributor down the road."
Benorden, a 5-10 Outside Hitter from Farragut High School in Knoxville, Tenn., was a Prep Extra 1st team selection from 2004-2006, AAA All-District player of the year, and the Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association AAA volleyball player of the year. She also played club for Smoky Mountain Juniors.
"Kelsey was a huge bonus for our program," said Torbett. "Jenna had signed early with us and Kelsey wanted to come to school with her after playing together on their club team. I watched her play and feel she can come in and impact our program right away. She is very good at ball control and she has a good vertical with a high reach to be effective at the net. I am thrilled that it worked out for her to be with our program in the fall"
Guinane, a 5-8 setter from Grapevine High School in Grapevine Texas, was a captain for her high school team. She earned the "G Award" which goes to the athlete that has all the characteristics of a model player and was an All-District selection. She played for Mondo Volleyball Club.
"We are very happy to have Rachel sign with us," said Torbett. "She is very highly trained athlete that has worked out with National Team players and All-Americans. I am anxious to see how having her here will change the dynamic of practice and competition within our program."
UNC Asheville finished 15-18 overall but improved in the Big South with a 10-4 conference record. The Bulldogs advanced to the conference championship match for the third time in the last four seasons.
