Pearson & Little Earn All-Conference Honors at Big South Track Meet

LYNCHBURG, VA. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field squads completed the 2007 outdoor season at the Big South Conference meet this past weekend.
The Bulldog women's squad finished in a tie for seventh with VMI at 27 points. The men's squad came in eighth place with 22 points. Liberty University won both titles for the fifth time in the last seven years.
Highlighting the women's squad was the performance of freshman sprinter Natalie Pearson. Pearson finished in third place in the 100 with a time of 12.04. She earned all-conference honors for the effort. Pearson earned the Bulldogs some points in the 200 with a sixth-place finish at a time of 24.47.
"We got a great effort from Natalie this weekend," stated UNC Asheville coach Dean Duncan. "Natalie's had a great year and she's only going to get better during her career."
On the men's side, senior Taylor Little captured an all-conference spot in the 5000 meters. He finished in second place with a time of 14.58.
"Taylor ran a very good race and only an All-American (Josh McDougal from Liberty) beat him out and he set a meet record while doing it," commented Duncan.
Junior Emily Mase picked up three points for the Bulldogs in the 5000 meters with a sixth place finish at a time of 18:41. She finished in fifth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 38.21. Freshman Ashleigh Spencer just missed getting a point for Asheville as she finished in ninth place (42:56).
Senior Root Kirbach finished his career by taking eighth in the 10,000 meters at a time of 32:14. Sara Huckbody worked hard and earned a point for Asheville with an eighth place finish in the 1500 meters at 4:57.
Freshman Corrie Trotter earned an eighth-place spot and got Asheville a point in the high jump with a leap of 1.55 meters.
Junior Brandon Hamilton came on strong at the end of the year and earned a fourth place finish in the 400 meters high hurdles at 55.60.
Senior Troy Young continued his solid year in the javelin as he finished in fifth place at 55.34 meters.
The Bulldogs women's 4x400 relay team finished in sixth place with a time of 4:09. The 4x100 team captured sixth place at 52.52.
Junior Joel Quirk and junior Emily Mase both earned a spot on the Big South All-Academic team for each sport. It was third time that each of them had been honored this year.
