LYNCHBURG, VA. - For the first time since 2001, Liberty University will play host to the New Balance Big South Conference Track & Field Championships Presented by UCS. The three-day event is scheduled to start Thursday at noon at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex.

The UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams are anxious to compete this weekend at the meet. Head Coach Dean Duncan likes the way his team is coming around for this weekend.

"I think we have the majority of our team peaking at just the right time," stated Duncan. "We've seen good performances each and every week from different athletes and we hope to put it all together this weekend. It should be a great meet and will be fun to watch."

The Bulldogs have high hopes for freshman sprinter Natalie Pearson. The native of England has set just about every sprint record for the Asheville track and field program as a rookie. She earned Big South Indoor Track and Field Rookie of the Year honors back in February after winning the 60 meters and finishing second in the 200 meters.

"We're excited about what Natalie can accomplish this weekend," said Duncan. "She's had a little injury the past week but she's coming around and should be ready for competition this weekend."

Asheville's distance team should compete for all-conference honors this weekend in juniors Emily Mase and Ingrid Allstaedt. Mase was an all-conference performer in cross country last fall. Allstaedt has run very well lately.

On the men's side, distance runner Taylor Little has enjoyed a fabulous year in the mile and 1500 meters. Little won the 1500 at the Charlotte Relays and finished fifth in the prestigious Wake Forest Open.

"Taylor has posted a fine year this season," said Duncan. "He's a senior who is going to want to go out on a high note."

Senior Troy Young has been getting better and better each week in the javelin. He'll battle for all-conference honors this weekend.
