CLEMSON, S.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field team send a partial squad to the Solid Orange Classic at Clemson University this past weekend.
The Bulldogs will compete later this week in the Big South Conference Track and Field meet at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, Va. on the campus of Liberty University.
"We didn't take everybody this past weekend but we wanted to take a few people to get some more experience before the Big South Conference championships," explained UNC Asheville coach Dean Duncan. "Overall, we had some solid results at Clemson. I was pleased with the way we competed against some solid competition."
One of the big highlights of the meet was the performance of freshman Matt Holman. Holman took a second place finish in the 800 with a time of 1:56.
Holman had company in the 800 as Adam Matthews came in sixth (2:03), Galen Goodrum in seventh (2:04) and Joel Quirk in ninth (2:08).
"Matt has been improving rapidly and is a runner we're very high on for the future," said Duncan. "He ran a great race at Clemson and set a new personal best in the 800."
Senior Omar Ahmad had an excellent meet with a second-place finish in the triple jump (13.32) and sixth-place finish in the long jump (6.29).
"I'm really happy for Omar," said Duncan. "He's in his senior year and is coming on at the right time."
Sprinter Brandon Hamilton had a solid meet with a fifth place finish in the 100 meters (11.23) and fifth place in the 400 meter hurdles (56.11).
"Brandon ran very aggressively in the hurdles on Saturday," said Duncan. "He's peaking at the right time and hoping he can make an impact this weekend at Liberty."
Troy Young finished third in the javelin (54.84), while Erik Nabi finished in fifth (49.45).
Dane Corriher picked up a fourth-place finish in the 400 (50.23). Duane Stepp was ninth in the 200 (24.09).
Daniel Corriher came in fourth in the shot put (12.77), while Keith Scruggs finished in sixth (11.97). Scruggs took fifth in the hammer throw (41.55), while Corrhier came in ninth in the hammer throw (36.70).
On the women's side, Corrie Trotter had a personal best in the high jump at 5.03 feet.
"I'm really happy for Corrie," said Duncan. "She is someone who has worked very hard to get better and it's starting to show in her results."
Erika Walker placed fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:25.
"Erika ran an excellent 400 this weekend," stated Duncan. "She ran an aggressive race and beat some good competition."
Emily Becker placed ninth in the 1500 (5:26). Freshman sprinter Natalie Pearson took sixth in the 100 meters (12.06).
Morgan Weeks finished ninth in the long jump (4.52).
