Volleyball Grabs Two Wins at Spikefest

Ficker Named Big South Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville's Lauren Ficker has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week in volleyball, while Chelsy Kimes of Coastal Carolina was tabbed the New Balance Freshman of the Week, the League announced today.

Ficker, a sophomore from Hendersonville, N.C.,  put away 31 kills, 3.44 kills per game and hit .348 in two matches to lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 record on the week.  She got her week started with 16 kills, five digs and a career high eight blocks as UNC Asheville downed USC Upstate, 3-2, on Nov. 8.  Two days later against future Big South foe Presbyterian, she notched 15 kills, a .429 hitting percentage, three digs and two blocks as the Bulldogs downed the Blue Hose, 3-1.  She averaged 1.11 blocks per game and 4.11 points per contest in the two-match span.

Kimes, an outside hitter from Munster, Ind., posted her 10th double-double on the season with 21 kills and 12 digs against Charleston Southern on Nov. 9 to ensure Coastal's No. 4 seed in the upcoming Big South Volleyball Championship.  She averaged 5.25 kills per game in the match, hit .304 and chipped in five aces in the 3-1 win over the Lady Bucs.  Her 21 kills and five aces were both career-highs.

The Big South volleyball Tournament begins this Thursday in Lynchburg, Va., UNC Asheville is the No. 6 seed and will face No.3 seed High Point at 4:30 p.m.
