Men's Soccer Opens 2007 Season at Kentucky Invitational

Men's Soccer Set to Host Clemson on Tuesday

10.08.2007 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville men's soccer hosts ACC foe Clemson Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood Field starting at 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Both teams are having frustrating seasons. The Bulldogs are in the midst of an eight-game winless streak and enter the game with Tigers with a 1-7-1 overall record. In Asheville's last five matches, the Bulldogs are 0-4-1 but have out-shot four of those five opponents. Three of those matches went to overtime with Asheville losing two of those contests and tying the other.

“It's been a tough stretch,” commented UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “We've been so close to winning some of those matches but simply haven't got the job done. Right now, our lads have to figure out a way to stop coming close but to win those matches.”

It doesn't get any easier with an equally frustrated Clemson squad coming to Greenwood Field for the first time ever. The Tigers are 4-6-1 on the year and 0-3-0 in the ACC. However, all six losses have been by one goal and three of those losses have occurred in overtime.

“Clemson's record isn't what it wants it to be but they are still an outstanding team,” declared Cornish. “They have lost to some of the top teams in the country and if you turn those overtime losses into overtime wins then we're talking about a team in the Top 10 in the nation. Clemson is very skilled in what it does.”

Cornish is excited about having the Tigers come to Asheville. The Tigers are just the second ACC team to visit Greenwood Field as UNC Chapel Hill came to play a match in 1996 and 1998.

“I greatly appreciate Clemson's coach, Trevor Adair agreeing to come play us here in Asheville,” stated Cornish. “This is a great day for soccer in Western North Carolina, and we're looking to make it a special afternoon.”

UNC Asheville will be led by junior forward Scott Szymanski. The former Asheville HS standout leads the Bulldogs in scoring with four goals and 10 points. Asheville has scored eight goals this year and Szymanski has accounted for six of them with four goals and two assists.

Clemson is led by forward Tate Parrish with five goals and six assists for 16 points. This will be the seventh meeting between the teams with the Tigers holding a 6-0 series lead.
