ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville men's soccer team is back in action this Wednesday afternoon when the Bulldogs host perennial Big South Conference power Coastal Carolina at Greenwood Field starting at 4 p.m. Admission is free.
The match will be video-streamed for a small fee on www.bigsouthsports.com or www.uncabulldogs.com.
UNC Asheville (1-5-1, 0-1-0 BSC) is stuck in a frustrating streak. The Bulldogs are 0-2-1 in their last three matches. All of the matches have gone to overtime and with any kind of luck, Asheville could have won every one of them. The Bulldogs out-shot all three opponents and just missed winning in regulation and in overtime. Asheville fell in its BSC opener, 1-0 to High Point at home on Saturday.
“We've got to find a way to win these matches,” commented Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “I think the lads are tired of coming close. We obviously don't get a break playing an excellent Coastal Carolina fixture.”
The Chanticleers (2-5-1, 1-0-0 BSC) have had a frustrating year as all five of their losses have been by one goal. However, the Chants upset Duke in exhibition play, 2-1 and have played a tough schedule.
“Coastal Carolina has been a bit snake-bit in its matches, and we certainly know the feeling,” stated Cornish. “We know Coastal Carolina is a very good team and will be one of the teams to beat in the league this year. Our lads are going to have to be at their best to have a chance at getting a result.”
Junior forward Scott Szymanski continues to have a great year for the Bulldogs. He leads Asheville in goals (4) and points (10). The Asheville has accounted for six of the Dogs eight goals this season with four goals and two assists.
The Bulldogs are at VMI for another league match on Saturday before returning home to take on national power Clemson at Greenwood Field on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
