HICKORY, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's cross country team placed five runners in the top eight and captured the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational Friday night.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs placed three runners in the top eight and finished in second place of the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational, just behind league rival Radford.
"I'm really pleased with the way both teams ran today," commented UNC Asheville head coach Dean Duncan. "We had great balance from everyone in our line-up and really improved from last week's meet at Western Carolina."
The Bulldog women's team won the race with 28 points. Everybody who ran for the Bulldogs finished in the top 10.
Leading the way for the women's squad was Emily Mase who finished in second place over the 5K course at a time of 19:21. She was followed by teammate Erica Walker who finished in fifth place at 20:17. Ingrid Allstaedt was right behind Walker in sixth place with a time of 20:21. Taking seventh place was Liza Duncan at 20:24, while freshman Katie Olert came in eighth spot at 20:44. Sara Huckbody enjoyed a solid race and finished in ninth place at 20:59. Ashley Spencer took 10th place with a time of 21:19
"Our times weren't that great but it was a slow course that made getting good times very tough," explained Duncan.
The UNC Asheville men's team had 36 points and was led by senior Jon Harmon. Harmon finished second over the 8K course with a time of 26:30. Freshman Keegan Peterson continued his solid rookie campaign with a fifth-place finish at 27:53. Adam Matthews took eighth place at 28:10. Andrew Burnette finished in 10th spot at 28:45. Joel Quirk came in 11th place with a time of 29:15, while Duane Stepp took 12th at 30:07.
Both teams will be in action again at Gardner-Webb but at different times. The men's squad participates in the Gardner-Webb Duals next Saturday, while the women have next week off before traveling to Gardner-Webb on Oct. 6.
